Miami Waterkeeper is proud to have partnered with AT&T and HSBC Bank at Virginia Key! It’s great partnerships like this that create change throughout our community.
On Friday, October 8th, 2021, employees with the InspirASIAN group at AT&T collected 59 lbs. of marine debris at Virginia Key. Employees worked in groups to collect debris and learned about the impact marine debris has on our ecosystems and health. Plastics were the most common debris found at Virginia Key and there’s an estimated 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean. These plastics can entangle marine species and impact wildlife that may mistake plastic waste for prey. So what can you do to minimize your impact? Refuse single-use plastics! Miami Waterkeeper has worked towards banning single-use plastics such as grocery bags and straws but the change must start with YOU! You can also volunteer with us to clean our coastlines and keep them looking beautiful and healthy.
On Saturday, October 9th, 2021, employees with HSBC Bank restored over a 1,263-square-foot area by removing invasive plants like Leatherleaf, from sensitive mangrove habitats. This was HSBC Bank’s 4th year partnering with Miami Waterkeeper to help fulfill the mission of keeping critical local waterways clean and protected. HSBC has had a long-standing commitment to the issue of water. The maintenance of shared, public green spaces near coastal waters is important socially as much as ecologically, and we couldn’t do it without volunteers and partners like HSBC Bank.
