Beta Pi Theta chapter answers the question, “What are the three major obstacles keeping our oceans from being healthy?
Across July 21 – 23, 2017 Miami Dade College’s (MDC’s) Beta Pi Theta chapter hosted the 2017 Phi Theta Kappa Florida Region Honors Institute at the Hialeah Campus. The institute included three days of compelling speakers on this year’s topic: How the World Works: Global Perspectives, which sparked thought-provoking discussions and provided leadership development opportunities to students. Miami Waterkeeper was honored to participate for day three, as part of a panel discussion with Rescue a Reef, discussing protection of our Florida waters.

After participating in the panel, Kelly Cox, Staff Attorney and Program Director for Miami Waterkeeper was interviewed by the Beta Pi Theta chapter team, who are developing an, “Honors-in-Action Project” marine conservation-themed. Honors-in-Action seeks to investigate a real-world community problem and collaboratively come up with a collaborative solution through service or advocacy. This program gives students an opportunity to develop a topic of interest beyond the classroom as they work together to research, collect, and analyze resources. The students’ sought Kelly’s guidance in effort to understand perspectives and narrow their project focus and theme. They aim to uncover three major obstacles keeping our oceans from being healthy and devise workable solutions. We’re so excited to see where their research takes them for their project!
