Providing a unique forum to highlight ongoing threats to our watershed, the event convened leaders to find solutions to the complex problems it faces. The 2022 State of the Water was anchored by Rachel Silverstein, Ph.D., who showcased Miami Waterkeeper’s key strategic initiatives to protect the water you love.

Porter Prize Awardee: Jenny Staletovich

JENNY STALETOVICH is an award-winning journalist and environmental reporter for WLRN Public Radio. For nearly 20 years, she has covered some of South Florida’s largest environmental stories, including the escalating cost of climate change in South Florida, the state’s battle with red tide and blue-green algae, and Everglades restoration – the largest water restoration project in U.S. history. Staletovich has also covered Miami Waterkeeper’s work in stories about FPL’s Turkey Point nuclear power plant contamination, the 2020 fish kill, and the impact of dredging on coral reefs. She has a deep knowledge of complex, yet vital issues that affect life in South Florida, and she uses her work to make these matters more understandable and accessible to a widespread audience. Staletovich brings existential challenges into public view, enabling the broader community to be more informed about their environment. Staletovich has earned state and national awards including the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for Distinguished Service to the First Amendment, the Green Eyeshades, and the Sunshine State Awards. In 2019, she received the Hoeveler Award from the University of Miami and Tropical Audubon’s Polly Redford Award for her environmental reporting. She was also named one of Audubon magazine’s national “women greening journalism,” and Miami New Times “Best Herald” reporter in 2016 for being an “informed, impassioned, and steady voice” as South Florida charts its future in the face of rising seas. |
About the Porter Prize
The Miami Waterkeeper Porter Prize is named in honor of Miami Waterkeeper’s longtime attorney, Jim Porter. With a deep and abiding love for Biscayne Bay, Porter dedicated thousands of hours of service to Miami Waterkeeper’s mission to protect our environment. In 2021, Porter lost a long battle with cancer. The Miami Waterkeeper Porter Prize is now awarded annually to a member of the community who, like Jim, has gone above and beyond in service of the environment.
About the Clean Water Act
In 1972, the Clean Water Act established the right to water that is safe for swimming, drinking, and fishing. Passed with broad bipartisan support, the Act is the foundation of the Miami Waterkeeper mission. Our work is aimed at ensuring the right granted under this Act – the right to clean water, which is essential to ecosystem protection and sea level rise resiliency. This month, we celebrate 50 years of the Clean Water Act by highlighting the water wins we have achieved, each of which is an essential piece to ensuring clean water.
