Local 10 News, in its year-end “Don’t Trash Our Treasure” review, revisited the environmental stories that shaped 2022 — from Florida’s manatee starvation crisis to the return of Biscayne Bay fish kills, when more than 4,000 pounds of dead fish were pulled from the bay’s north basin just two years after 2020’s loss of 27,000 marine creatures. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Dr. Rachel Silverstein pointed to the root cause: “It is pollution coming from septic tanks, from storm water runoff, from sewage leaks and from fertilizer.”
