Environmental Groups Ask for Manatees to Be Reclassified as ‘Endangered’ Again

The Epoch Times reported on the five-group petition — Miami Waterkeeper among them — asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reclassify the West Indian manatee as endangered after more than 1,100 died in 2021, largely from starvation as pollution wiped out their seagrass. Our Executive Director Rachel Silverstein made the case that an endangered listing “would provide immediate protection,” adding: “We need to address water-quality issues to give the manatee a fighting chance to survive and thrive.”
