Analyzing potential damage done by lowering our polluted canals into Biscayne Bay ahead of Hurricane Ian

Local 10 News examined the risk created when water managers lowered South Florida’s canals ahead of Hurricane Ian, flushing some of Miami-Dade’s most polluted water into a Biscayne Bay already at a tipping point — with the Little River outfall reading just 25% dissolved oxygen. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein warned that “the bay is very fragile right now because of all the pollution that’s already in it, and so adding any additional stress on the bay can push it over the edge.”
