DEP Removes 56 Tons of Hurricane Debris from Spoil Islands in Biscayne Bay

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced the removal of 56 tons of Hurricane Irma marine debris — dock lumber, tires, fishing gear, and plastics — from 13 spoil islands in Biscayne Bay, restoring 45 island acres. Led by DEP’s Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves with a $100,000 NOAA grant, the 46-day effort targeted debris that degrades water quality and harms wildlife across the bay.
