Fecal bacteria skyrockets to 150 times beyond safe levels in some Florida canals after historic flooding

The Daily Mail reported on the fecal bacteria that skyrocketed in Fort Lauderdale’s canals after April’s historic flooding, drawing on Miami Waterkeeper’s sampling: our team measured 10,112 units of enterococci at Himmarshee Canal — nearly 150 times the EPA’s safe limit, and 37 times the level of a used toilet. Water quality specialist Aliza Karim called it unprecedented: “We’ve never seen this many sites fail above 1,000, ever.”
