First fertilizer ban put in place in South Florida with hopes of stopping chemicals leaking into Biscayne Bay, effective through Oct. 31

WSVN reported on Miami-Dade’s first fertilizer ban — the strongest such ordinance in Florida — which prohibits nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers from May 15 through October 31 to keep nutrient pollution linked to recent fish kills out of Biscayne Bay during the rainy season. Miami Waterkeeper’s Rachel Silverstein reinforced the timing: “Our waterways are especially at risk in the rainy summer months.”
