Ordinance limiting fertilizer use aims to keep South Florida waterways healthy

Local 10 News reported on Miami-Dade’s new fertilizer ordinance — the strongest in the state — which bans nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers from May 15 to November 1 to stop nutrient runoff from feeding the algae blooms that starve the bay of oxygen, as in 2020’s kill of more than 27,000 marine creatures. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein, who long advocated for the ban, noted the 2020 tragedy “did result in people becoming more aware of the dangers facing Biscayne Bay.”
