Fish on drugs: cocktail of medications is ‘contaminating ocean food chain’

The Guardian reported on a startling FIU study that found all 93 South Florida bonefish sampled tested positive for pharmaceuticals — one Key West fish carried 17, including antidepressants up to 300 times human therapeutic levels — as populations of the prized “grey ghost” have fallen more than 50% in four decades. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein traced the contamination to sewage spills, wastewater discharge, and failing septic tanks, calling it “further evidence that we need to make urgent changes to upgrade our infrastructure.”
