“Sign of Hope”: Rare Sighting of Two Endangered Sawfish in Biscayne Bay

Miami New Times reported on a rare sighting of two critically endangered smalltooth sawfish near Virginia Key — a prehistoric-looking species whose U.S. population has plummeted roughly 95% since 1900 and which won federal endangered protection in 2003. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein, who suspected the pair were mating, called the encounter “a sign of hope,” adding: “It gave everybody a lot of joy knowing that these rare creatures are out there.”
