Mangroves help fight hurricanes. Now Miami wants to ban planting any more at city parks

WLRN Public Media reported on a Miami commissioner’s proposal to ban planting new mangroves in city parks to protect waterfront views — a move that would counter decades of restoration and strip away a key defense against sea rise in a city where 80% of the bay’s mangroves were long ago replaced by seawalls. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein didn’t mince words: “The city of Miami will be a national laughing stock if they go ahead and ban mangroves in the most vulnerable city in the world to sea-level rise.”
