Miami port dredging damaging sea life, state inspectors say

The Miami Herald reported on the mounting damage from the PortMiami dredge, where inspectors found that boulders dropped to help young coral grow had instead crushed existing coral and sponges, an artificial reef lay dusted in sediment, and silt had thickened the water into “anoxic conditions” starving the bay bottom of oxygen. The findings followed a complaint and threat to sue from the Biscayne Bay Waterkeeper — now Miami Waterkeeper — unless the work was cleaned up.
