New NOAA report confirms widespread coral damage from Port Miami dredge

WLRN Public Media reported on the new NOAA assessment confirming that the 2013–2015 Port Miami dredge buried at least 278 acres of reef and killed more than a half-million corals — far beyond the “six corals” the Corps’ monitoring firm originally claimed. Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director Rachel Silverstein, whose nonprofit forced the issue in court, estimated the county could face up to $400 million in repairs and pressed the case: “How can we be thinking about dredging Port Miami again without having fixed the damage that was done in 2015 and before?”
