Nuclear regulators reverse Turkey Point operating license extensions

WLRN Public Media reported on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s rare reversal of the 80-year operating license extensions for FPL’s Turkey Point reactors — resetting their expiration to the 2030s after finding the 2019 approval relied on outdated environmental data. The reversal followed a suit brought by Miami Waterkeeper, Friends of the Earth, and the NRDC, and Executive Director Rachel Silverstein pressed the core concern: “No one’s ever run a nuclear power plant for 80 years before… especially in the context of sea level rise, the groundwater contamination coming from the plant and the downgraded safety rating.”
